Tsundi Lake

Nestled in the heart of Georgia's Samtskhe-Javakheti Region, Tsundi Lake promises an unparalleled serene experience for every visitor. Measuring 216.93 meters (711.72 feet) by 157.58 meters (516.99 feet), this enchanting lake offers an inviting tableau of natural beauty.

Situated a stone's throw away from Tmogvi Fortress, the lake unfolds a breathtaking panorama. Fed by snow, rain, and subterranean fresh water sources, Tsundi Lake majestically mirrors the skies above. The origins of this natural spectacle are as intriguing as the vista it provides - the lake owes its existence to a landslide of the western periphery of the Akhalkalaki volcanic plateau, causing a foundational pit in the gorge of the Mtkvari river.

Imbued with cultural lore, Tsundi Lake also goes by another evocative name, "Tamar's Mirror". According to legend, Queen Tamar used the reflective surface of this lake to style her hair, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural memory of the region.

Anglers will find the lake an alluring spot to cast their lines, as the waters teem with Crucian carp. Those seeking tranquillity can find solace in the beautiful surroundings. However, prospective swimmers should note that the lake is encircled by high grass, making direct access to the water somewhat challenging.

Located in Aspindza municipality, on the right side of the Mtkvari river and at an altitude of 1539 meters above sea level, Tsundi Lake covers an area of 0.034 square kilometers and has a basin area of 1.8 square kilometers. With a maximum depth of 10.8 meters and an average depth of 6.6 meters, the lake holds approximately 284,000 cubic meters of water. This captivating water body, once speculated to be an explosion crater or maar, provides crystal-clear, fresh water through underground drainage.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, a fishing lover, or a nature aficionado, Tsundi Lake's mesmerizing charm is sure to leave you inspired.
