Hidden high in the Greater Caucasus near Georgia’s northeastern border, Black Rock Lake lies at the end of one of the country’s most demanding and rewarding trekking routes. This three-day adventure begins and ends in Tbilisi, leading travellers deep into the protected wilderness of Lagodekhi and through landscapes that change dramatically with every stage of the journey.
Covering approximately 42 kilometres, the route begins beneath the dense canopy of Lagodekhi’s ancient hornbeam and beech forests before climbing into the subalpine zone. Forest paths gradually give way to open meadows, exposed mountain ridges and sweeping views across the Alazani Valley. At approximately 2,800 metres above sea level, Black Rock Lake emerges among the high Caucasus mountains: remote, dramatic and accessible only on foot or horseback.
Lagodekhi is one of Georgia’s oldest protected natural areas and is celebrated for its exceptional biodiversity. Its forests and alpine landscapes provide a habitat for deer, chamois, East Caucasian tur, wild goats and numerous species of mountain birds. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the remarkable isolation and natural richness of the area create a genuine feeling of travelling through untouched wilderness.
The tour includes two nights in basic shared mountain shelters. These remote shelters provide protection from the elements but offer only simple facilities, without private rooms, showers, bedding or hotel-style comfort. Guests should be prepared for a true mountain experience in which the surrounding landscape is the main attraction.
Although no technical climbing skills or mountaineering equipment are required, this is a physically demanding trek. Considerable elevation gain, long hiking days, steep sections and changing mountain weather make it most suitable for fit travellers with previous hiking experience.
Camping at designated sites can be arranged for private groups upon request. A separate horseback version is also available for travellers who prefer to experience the route without completing the full journey on foot.
More than a hike to a mountain lake, this is a complete wilderness journey through ancient forests, alpine silence and the untamed landscapes of the Greater Caucasus, leading to a destination that must truly be earned.

Into the Ancient Forest
Early in the morning, meet your guide at your Tbilisi hotel and depart for Lagodekhi in Georgia’s eastern Kakheti region. The early departure is essential, as the first trekking day includes the longest continuous ascent of the journey.
Upon arrival at the Lagodekhi Protected Areas Visitor Centre, the group registers for the route, presents identification documents and completes a final equipment and weather check. Any luggage not required in the mountains can be left in secure storage before the trek begins.
The first section follows the forested Lagodekhi River valley. After crossing the river, the path begins its principal ascent through rare hornbeam stands and untouched beech forest. The climb is long and physically demanding but reveals the extraordinary changes in Lagodekhi’s natural environment.
As the trail gains elevation, dense woodland gradually gives way to subalpine vegetation, open clearings and views across the Kakheti plains. Regular rest and water breaks will be taken according to the pace of the group.
In the late afternoon or early evening, arrive at Meteo Shelter, located at approximately 1,950 metres above sea level. Settle into the shared shelter and enjoy a simple mountain dinner prepared by the trekking team.
Meteo Shelter is a basic wilderness refuge. Guests must bring sleeping bags and should not expect showers, private rooms, bedding or reliable electricity.

To the Shores of Black Rock Lake
After an early breakfast, continue along Kochalo Ridge towards the upper alpine zone. The forest slowly disappears, revealing open mountain meadows, exposed ridgelines and increasingly expansive views across the Alazani Valley and the Greater Caucasus.
This section passes through important wildlife habitats. Depending on the season, weather and movement of the group, it may be possible to observe deer, chamois, East Caucasian tur, wild goats, Caucasian snowcocks, grouse or birds of prey. All wildlife must be observed quietly and from a respectful distance.
The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as the trail crosses alpine wetlands and passes small glacially formed lakes. Black Rock Lake then appears below the surrounding mountain ridges at approximately 2,800 metres above sea level.
Enjoy time beside the lake for rest, photography and a packed lunch. Guests must remain on the Georgian side of the lake and may not attempt to walk around it, as the international border passes through the area.
After visiting the lake, continue for approximately three kilometres to Demidov Shelter. Positioned on alpine meadows at approximately 2,650 metres, the shelter offers far-reaching views over Lagodekhi, the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Range.

Down from the High Caucasus
After breakfast, begin the long descent towards Lagodekhi along Kudigori Ridge. The first section offers open mountain views before the trail gradually re-enters the protected forest.
Although the day is primarily downhill, it should not be underestimated. Descending more than 2,000 metres places considerable pressure on the knees and requires concentration, balance and controlled pacing.
The path can become muddy and slippery after rain. The guide may change the pace, departure time or descent route according to weather and trail conditions.
Continue through beech forest, wild vegetation and river landscapes before returning to the Lagodekhi Protected Areas Visitor Centre. Collect any stored luggage and meet the driver for the return journey.
Arrival in Tbilisi is expected in the evening. The precise arrival time depends on the group’s hiking pace, weather, trail conditions and traffic.
