Unearthing the Treasures of South Georgia

Begin your journey at 9:00 AM as your personal driver-guide collects you from your Tbilisi accommodation, setting the stage for an extraordinary travel experience. Our first destination is the historic town of Gori, situated just 78 km (48 miles) away. Here, you'll explore the ancient Gori Fortress, where panoramic views stretch across the region, and delve into the life and legacy of Josef Stalin at his birthplace, the Stalin House-Museum. After savoring local Georgian cuisine at a traditional eatery for lunch, we venture to the enigmatic Uplistsikhe Cave Town. As you wander through this rock-hewn city dating back to the 1st millennium BC, you'll discover hidden tunnels, ancient churches, and halls carved directly into the mountainside, with an on-site museum showcasing a wealth of archaeological treasures that bring history vividly to life.

In the afternoon, we'll continue our trip to Borjomi, a picturesque resort town famed worldwide for its healing mineral waters. You'll have the chance to taste the renowned Borjomi sparkling water straight from the source and enjoy a leisurely stroll through the Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park, one of Europe's largest protected areas encompassing 5,300 square kilometers (2,046 square miles) of breathtaking nature. As dusk settles, we'll arrive in Akhaltsikhe, where you'll unwind for the night, eagerly anticipating the adventures that await on Day 2 of your tour package.

A Journey Through History and Natural Splendor

After a hearty breakfast, your day begins with a visit to Rabati Castle, the crowning jewel of Akhaltsikhe's historical district. This captivating complex is a mosaic of cultural influences, showcasing a medieval fortress with imposing walls, a museum housing ancient manuscripts and archaeological artifacts, and places of worship that stand as testaments to the area's diverse heritage. Leaving Rabati behind, we'll travel south along the scenic Mtkvari River Gorge, a route adorned with rolling hills and storied landmarks. We'll pause at the impressive Khertvisi Fortress, one of Georgia's oldest and most iconic fortifications, standing sentinel over the landscape. Lunch.

Our journey culminates at Vardzia, the awe-inspiring 12th-century cave monastery complex. Carved into the cliffs of the Erusheti Mountains, Vardzia stretches over 500 meters (1,640 feet) with 19 tiers of caves. Conceived during the golden age of Queen Tamar's reign, this ancient city still shelters monks today. As you explore its labyrinthine corridors and marvel at the intricate frescoes, you'll feel the echoes of history envelop you.

As the sun begins its descent, we'll embark on the return trip to Tbilisi, bringing your two-day travel adventure to a close. You'll arrive enriched by the rich history and natural beauty you've encountered — a journey that transcends mere sightseeing to touch the very essence of Georgia's southern landscapes.
