Jandari Lake

Nestled 291.4 meters (956 feet) above sea level, Jandari Lake (or Jandara Lake) is an awe-inspiring body of water that rests gently on the border of Georgia and Azerbaijan. Stretching 5.14 km (3.20 mi) by 2.44 km (1.52 mi), it spans a surface area of 10.6 km² (4.09 square miles) and harbors a catchment area of 102 km² (39.38 square miles). It reaches a depth of 7.2 meters (23.6 feet) at its deepest point, fascinating both casual observers and enthusiastic anglers.

Historically, Jandari was a shallow, salty lake that frequently succumbed to the scorching summer heat. This all changed in 1870 with the construction of the Gardabani canal, designed to redirect water from the Mtkvari River. This initiative transformed Jandari into a reservoir, further bolstered by an additional canal originating from the Tbilisi Samgori water reservoir.

However, this solution brought new challenges. The lake's health has been threatened by increased pollution, mainly from the Mtkvari River and reservoirs, and the water level has dwindled due to the expansion of irrigated land in both Georgia and Azerbaijan and the uncoordinated use of water.

Despite these threats, Jandari Lake remains a beloved spot for fishing. It's also a crucial rest stop and wintering site for over 20,000 water birds, making it a paradise for bird watchers during migratory periods. The sight of pelicans, cormorants, and wild ducks sweeping across the lake is a truly enchanting spectacle.

Encircling the lake is a captivating blend of semi-desert and steppe vegetation, punctuated by patches of floodplain forest. The aspens and willows add an extra touch of green to the lake's mesmerizing backdrop. Jandari Lake is not just a water body—it's a thriving ecosystem, a stage where flora and fauna come together for a breathtaking performance.

With its open spaces, captivating views, and the serene calm of the lake, Jandari is an idyllic destination. Its lush green surroundings make it a perfect picnic spot and an explorer's dream. Whether it's bird watching, fishing, or simply soaking in nature's beauty, Jandari Lake offers a wide array of experiences. So, why wait? Embark on your journey and immerse yourself in the tranquil harmony of Jandari Lake.
