Alvani, a picturesque village in Georgia's Kakheti region, brings together two neighboring settlements: Kvemo Alvani (Lower Alvani) and Zemo Alvani (Upper Alvani). Nestled in the valley of the Alazani River, it rests at an elevation of 460 meters (about 1,509 feet) above sea level, surrounded by majestic mountains and verdant valleys.
The lifeblood of Alvani's inhabitants is agriculture. Traditional practices like potato cultivation and sheep farming flourish here, invigorated by financial support from the Czech Development Agency. The local state farm specializes in breeding Tushuri sheep — a breed renowned for its resilience and high-quality wool.
But Alvani is more than fields and flocks. It serves as the administrative center for the Tusheti Protected Areas, managing the Tusheti State Reserve and National Park. These pristine natural sanctuaries attract tourists and researchers from around the globe, offering encounters with rare species of flora and fauna.
In 2013, a poignant memorial was unveiled by President Mikheil Saakashvili in honor of local hero Giorgi Antsukhelidze, as well as K. Abuladze and S. Mozaiadze, who perished during the war in Georgia. This monument stands as a testament to courage and sacrifice, a solemn reminder of the value of freedom and independence.
Situated on the Tbilisi–Omalo highway, Alvani lies 120 kilometers (approximately 75 miles) from Georgia's capital. The stretch of road from Alvani to Omalo, weaving through steep mountain passes and narrow switchbacks, was dubbed by the BBC in 2013 as one of Europe's most dangerous roads. Yet, it beckons adventurers and thrill-seekers, drawn by the promise of breathtaking vistas and adrenaline-fueled journeys.
Neighboring villages like Khorbalo and Pichkhovani to the north enrich the cultural tapestry of the region. Zemo Alvani, together with Khorbalo, forms a community that champions local self-governance and the preservation of time-honored traditions.
According to the 2014 census, Alvani is home to 3,306 people. The villagers are renowned for their hospitality and deep reverence for their ancestral heritage. With its rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and unique cultural identity, Alvani is a place that captivates the heart of every traveler.
