Depart Tbilisi early for a full-day journey into the Greater Caucasus along the historic Georgian Military Highway.
Your first stop is the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, followed by a visit to Ananuri Fortress. Once the stronghold of the powerful Dukes of Aragvi, the complex combines defensive towers, stone walls and richly decorated churches overlooking the water.
Continue towards Pasanauri, a mountain town known as the birthplace of khinkali. Your guide can recommend a local restaurant where you may taste Georgia’s famous mountain dumplings.
As the road climbs higher, stop at Gudauri Panorama for dramatic views across the surrounding valleys. Continue through Jvari Pass and past the colourful travertine mineral formations before descending towards Stepantsminda.
In Kazbegi, transfer to a local 4×4 vehicle and ascend to Gergeti Trinity Church. Standing high above Stepantsminda beneath Mount Kazbek, the 14th-century church is one of Georgia’s most iconic sights.
