Exploring Ancient Wonders – From Samtavisi to Mtskheta

After a hearty breakfast, your guide will meet you at the hotel at 9:00 am to begin today's fascinating journey. Our first destination is the village of Samtavisi in western Georgia, home to a stunning 12th-century cathedral. Recent archaeological excavations near the cathedral, discovered in 2007, have unveiled Grakliani Hill — a site evidencing human presence dating back an astonishing 300,000 years.

Next, we travel to the mystical cave complex of Uplistsikhe, aptly named "The Lord’s Fortress." Carved into the sandstone cliffs, this ancient city was once a bustling center of worship and trade from the 1st millennium BC to the 4th century AD. As we wander through the labyrinthine ruins, you'll witness the remnants of marketplaces, noble and common districts, workshops, ancient streets, temples, and even secret escape tunnels. Marvel at the outdoor theater adorned with octagonal Roman vaults — a testament to the city's historical significance.

Midday, we'll pause for a delightful lunch at a family-owned winery, where you can savor traditional Georgian cuisine and perhaps sample some locally produced wines.

In the afternoon, we'll head to the historic town of Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the capital of the Eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia from the 4th century BC until the 5th century AD. Located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Mtskheta is a treasure trove of ancient monuments. We'll visit the Armaziskhevi archaeological site, explore the magnificent 11th-century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, and ascend to the 6th-century Jvari Monastery, perched high above the town. Don't miss the quaint Antiochia basilica behind the cathedral, part of which dates back to the 4th century.

As the sun sets, we'll return to Tbilisi, where you can relax and reflect on the day's discoveries.

Unveiling Prehistoric Secrets – Dmanisi and Bolnisi Expedition

Today, we set out on an extraordinary trip to the southern reaches of Georgia, venturing to the unparalleled archaeological site of Dmanisi. After a scenic two-hour drive through the picturesque Mashavera River Gorge, we'll arrive at this groundbreaking locale, where excavations have unearthed the earliest known settlement of hominids outside the African continent — rewriting the pages of human history.

Nestled in the verdant landscapes of Lower Kartli, Dmanisi offers a wealth of historical treasures. We'll explore the 7th-century Dmanisi Sioni Church, the formidable 10th-century fortress, and the evocative ruins of the royal palace. As you walk these ancient grounds, imagine the lives of our distant ancestors who once called this place home.

We'll pause for a leisurely lunch, savoring local flavors amidst the tranquil countryside.

Our adventure continues with a visit to the quaint town of Bolnisi. Here, we'll admire the Bolnisi Sioni Basilica, a 4th-century marvel where one of the oldest Georgian inscriptions is etched into stone — a silent witness to the nation's early Christian heritage. The journey through time culminates at the Bolnisi Archaeological Museum, which houses an impressive collection of ethnographic and historical artifacts dating back to the dawn of human civilization.

As evening approaches, we'll return to Tbilisi, your mind filled with the profound stories of the ancient past.
