Saguramo Reserve

Nestled on the Saguramo-Ialno ridge, just 25 kilometers (about 15.5 miles) from Tbilisi, lies the Saguramo Reserve. Established in 1946, this protected natural wonderland spans over five thousand hectares (approximately 12,355 acres), making it an expansive sanctuary for nature enthusiasts.

The Saguramo Reserve is a verdant tapestry woven primarily from diverse forest species. Its thick, leafy expanse is adorned with beech, hornbeam, oak, elm, maple, and wild pear trees. However, what sets this forest apart is its rare and treasured assortment of tertiary period relict plants. These include the resplendent blueberries, the sternly beautiful Colchis boxwood, yew trees, and even wild grapes, all standing as vivid reminders of a bygone era.

But the beauty of Saguramo is not just rooted in its flora. It also plays host to a rich assortment of fauna, housing mammals like the Caucasian red deer and roe deer. The presence of critically endangered species, such as the Caucasian red deer, snow leopards, bears, wolves, jackals, and a plethora of bird species, makes the reserve a hotbed of biodiversity.

Adding a historical dimension to its natural allure, the Saguramo Reserve is home to significant landmarks. One such monument is the Zedazeni Monastery, established in the 6th century by the Assyrian monk John Zedazneli. Additionally, visitors can explore the ruins of the ancient Salancik fortress, which predates our era. The reserve also accommodates the St. Grigoli Khandzteli Church, the Ilia Chavchavadze House-Museum, the ruins of Vejini Monastery, and a royal palace.

Now forming part of the Tbilisi National Park, the reserve continues to serve as a prominent green zone in the city. Beginning in the town of Saguramo, a charming walking trail weaves its way across the Saguramo Range, promising breathtaking vistas and a tranquil communion with nature.

The reserve is also surrounded by various resort areas including Saguramo, Karsani, Zedazeni, Tsitsamuri, and Tserovani, offering the perfect retreat for those seeking relaxation amidst nature.

The Saguramo Reserve, where nature's vibrant palette meets history's fascinating narratives, is an unmissable exploration for any visitor to Georgia.
