Discover the beauty of Georgian textile craftsmanship through an immersive felt-making masterclass in Tbilisi. Guided by a talented felt artist with over 17 years of experience, you will learn how natural wool and silk fibers can be transformed into elegant wearable art.
In a welcoming studio setting, you will explore the traditional technique of wet felting — a centuries-old method that bonds natural fibers using water, pressure, and careful craftsmanship. Working with high-quality merino wool and hand-dyed materials, you will design and create your own scarf, blending colors and textures to produce a unique piece that reflects your creativity.
This hands-on workshop offers not only an artistic experience but also a deeper connection to Georgia’s rich tradition of handmade textiles.
Description
Your experience begins with a comfortable pick-up from anywhere in Tbilisi. After a short drive through the city, you will arrive at the artist’s peaceful studio, located in a charming courtyard near a historic church — a quiet and inspiring corner of the city where creativity flourishes.
You will be welcomed by the felt artist, whose work with wool and natural fibers spans more than 17 years and has been recognized with international support, including a USAID grant promoting traditional craftsmanship.
The workshop begins with an introduction to the materials used in felt making. You will learn about merino wool, natural silk fibers and hand-dyed materials that bring vibrant textures and colors to each piece.
As part of the experience, guests visiting during the appropriate season may also observe the fascinating process of natural silk production, as silkworms are raised in the studio and their delicate fibers are used in some of the artist’s creations.
Next comes the creative part. You will begin designing your own scarf, laying out layers of soft merino wool to form a base and adding silk threads or decorative patterns of your choosing. The standard scarf size is approximately 40 × 180 cm, offering a generous canvas for your artistic expression.
Once the design is complete, you will learn the traditional wet-felting technique, where water, gentle pressure, and rolling motions fuse the fibers into a single durable textile. Watching the materials transform from soft layers into a cohesive fabric is a truly satisfying process.
Throughout the workshop, you will enjoy Georgian tea, coffee, and traditional snacks, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for creativity.
By the end of the session, your handmade scarf will be ready. You may either take it with you in its slightly damp state to dry at home, or the studio can finish drying it and deliver it to your location in Tbilisi the following day.
If you wish, you may also explore the studio’s collection of handmade felt artworks and textiles, available for purchase with a 10% guest discount.
For those interested in alternative creations, the workshop can also be adapted to focus on felt hats, hair accessories, or small decorative pieces.
After the experience, your driver will take you comfortably back to your hotel or any location in Tbilisi.
